Tapered EPS Cores

These cores have many uses.  They can be used to build wings, or tail surfaces for Model airplanes and UAV's.  These cores are hot wire cut from virgin 1# EPS foam on our precision CNC foam cutting equipment.

You can select any of the 26 different airfoils shown on this page for your cores.

Chord lengths range from 4" up to 12" and wing spans of 24" to 72". 

All Taper EPS cores are delivered as a 2 piece set of 1 left and 1 right hand core.  Cores are shipped in their wing beds or shucks, and delivered to your door in 10 days or less from the receipt of you order.

Taper EPS Cores

EPS foam is made from small beads of plastic that are expanded, then molded into large blocks or billets.  It is typically used for insulation or packaging, but many years ago, modelers found that it made an excellent core material for wing building due to it's light weight and high compressive strength. 

EPS foam cores are typically covered with balsa sheeting. Some builders will use a balsa leading edge cap that is glued on after the sheeting has been applied.  You can specify the size of this cap strip as part of your order and we will trim the leading edge of the cores for you. 

EPS foam cores can also be covered with low temperature covering films such as Ultracote and/or Color Tape.  This method works well for small electric powered models and gliders.  EPS foam cores can be vacuum bagged with balsa sheeting, fiberglass or carbon cloth and Epoxy resins.

Which foam will work best for your project will depend on several factors:

EPP - Expanded Polypropylene
+ High cost
+ Impact resistant
- Low Structural Strength
- Reinforcement required for most wings
+ Cover with Shipping Tape or Low Temp coverings
+ Works well for small wings. 
- Does not scale up well
+ Compatible with Epoxy, CA or Goop Glues
- Not Compatible with Vacuum Bag methods

If you plan to sheet your EPS cores with balsa or thin plywood sheeting, it can be difficult to wrap the sheeting around the leading edge of the core without it cracking or splitting. 

In this case, It is common to use a leading edge cap strip of balsa wood that is added after cores have been sheeted.

You can select the size of this leading edge cap strip when you order your cores.  Select zero for a fully rounded leading edge if you do not plan to use a leading edge cap strip.

If you plan to cover your cores with fiberglass or carbon cloth and resin, you will typically not need this feature.
