EPP Foam

EPP is an acronym for Expanded Polypropylene.  EPP has found many uses in the model airplane world and is a light weight and much more durable material compared to rigid foams such as white beaded EPS.

We stock 1.3# density EPP in White and Black.  1.9# EPP is available only in white.

Thin sliced EPP Sheets:

We stock 3mm, 4mm  and 6mm EPP foam in 24" x 36" sheets.  The foam is 1.3# density white EPP that has been machine blade sliced to either 3mm or 4mm.  Prices are listed above.  There is a minimum order of 5 sheets which can be of mixed sizes, either 3mm, 4mm or 6mm.

Thin sliced EPP sheets are available only in a 24" by 36" size and only in 1.3# density.  Black and White are available.

EPP Foam Use

We stock EPP foam in 1.3# or 1.9# density.  Our 1.3# EPP is by far the most popular and commonly used for wings and flying surfaces.  The 1.9# EPP is generally used for fuselages, but can also be used for wings.  The 1.9# EPP carves and sands more easily and is a more rigid material compared to 1.3#, but it is heavier.

EPP structures are typically covered with Color Tape, or a low temperature heat shrink covering like Ultracote.  EPP should not be used for surfaces that you intended to sheet with balsa wood.  Rigid EPS foams are better suited for covering with sheet balsa.

EPP Foam Facts

EPP foam is molded in 4 ft. x 6 ft. sheets that we purchase in large quantities and cut into smaller sizes with our CNC foam cutters.  Thicknesses greater than 6mm (1/4") are hot wire cut.  Thinner sheets are produced by slicing.  We offer CNC hot wire cut sheets from 1/4" up to 6" thick in 24" x 36" or 36" x 48" sizes.

Our thin sliced sheets (TSEPP) are produced on our precision slicer which can hold thickness tolerences far closer that commercial skivers that are used by other EPP suppliers.  All TSEPP sheets are 24" x 36" and  2mm, 3mm, 4mm or 6mm thick.

All thin sliced sheets have a sliced finish on both surfaces. 

All hot wire cut sheets less than 2" thick will be hot wire cut on both surfaces.  Sheets 2" and greater may have 1 surface that is molded.  EPP is a molded material and has a surface "skin" on 1 or more sides.  The molded surface is not as true as a cut surface, and this "skin" is 1/8"  to 1/4" deep.

The "skin" is a higher density than the core of the material and does not cut the same with a hot wire as the core of the sheet.  This fact should be taken into account when selecting sheet thickness.
